CHAPTER 2

You run away, deeper towards the moor. The water splashes beneath your feet and you feel that it is red; Far away now, you hear the howling of the dog and the clashing of steel.

You feel compelled to stop. You look both ways, but you don't know why. Now you see, as your turn your head to look over your shoulder; a being of light stands there.

He walks over the water without making a ripple; and his skin is of a white so pure you are forced to look away in pain.

Was that Death? Or some other thing watching over me?

A hand upon your shoulder, and a voice from another world:

"You will die here."

The hand stretches far away; to where it came from, to the world of shadows. But the fingers, they remain, and they are at your throat!

"I'll wring your neck!" speaks the smile; with a missing eye, the yellow death - the mark of chaos studies the blood flowing from your neck and drinks from the missing air. Jackal!

With the scarce remaining strength you have, you kick him backwards; you take a deep breath, reeling back and splashing water.

The same pose, hands outstretched by his side; an aurora, a penumbra maybe of light and shadow and havoc; a triune creature, you feel, that is best left to either die with the ages or die here by your hand.

You wallop it over the head and blood spills; you trade blows.

"Stop laughing!" you yell "You're dead!"

He laughs as he sits on the dirt; his hand covers his face

"A prison I was cornered; with nowhere to go I looked above, but there are no stars to soothe my soul. And so I will die, but I will live again. And I look at you and I see only a fossil of a man"

"What are you blabblering about?"

"The New Wolf of Death! All hail the New Wolf of Death! Raise your weapons high and cheer; and take glee at the varicose veins; the boiling blood of the cities, and take to the skies and see the weak crawl!"

"Quiet!"

"The rotting, bulging corpse of man! Aye the beauty of rolling muscle, chewed up by the ignorant and foolish! And stand upon the hill and look at the destruction with awe; for you are a member of a new strain of man! That will survive the plagues of the future eons, not afraid of Death, but be it's brother in arms!"

"Karniite scum!"

"And upon the throne, crowned King of Kings, aye Karn and his subjects will oversee the War of Wars!"

"War of Wars...?"

"This is only a fraction of the destruction hurled at this universe. So ignorant are we, to think ourselves mightier than the coming age of Death! Faster than light, incomprehensible! Such..."

He collapses.
